Vice and Virtue

The Twins' End

That night, Ankshi told the adventurers more about herself, in particular how she believe she is a splinter of a deity, and thinks there are more of her out there. A disagreement sparked in the party of whether to divulge all of this information to the mysterious stranger, but the argument was shelved for a later time.

During the night, the vampires retaliated for breaching their inner sanctum and killing several of their minions, resulting in around two dozen dead villagers that they heaped in front of the church of Pelor, though Ankshi kept the church itself and the people inside safe, letting the adventurers rest through the night for the day ahead.

The next day, the adventurers discussed what to do next, and another argument ensued, but eventually it was decided that attacking the twins that day was probably the best idea, rather than wait another night and have the vampires possibly retaliate once more.

Thus, they headed out to Earthsgate Castle again, where the kobolds had already seemingly finished their own assault on the catacombs where Seronel’s body was resting to recover from his previous defeat. The Black Guard were nowhere to be found, so seemingly the mysterious stranger had kept his word.

The adventurers made their way inside the castle again, where some of the Black Guard were still around but easily dispatched, but as they ascended to the twins’ chamber, they were ambushed by more powerful warlocks and guards that proved to be a taxing fight. Nevertheless, the adventurers continued, and though the twins had laid another trap on the way, the party quickly engaged them in combat and armed with the information and gadgets from the mysterious stranger, they prevailed against the vampires and turned them to dust.

While they worked on destroying their coffins as well so that the vampire twins couldn’t reform, the adventurers found two curious gems, and the mysterious stranger made another sudden appearance. The party gave him some information about Ankshi, promising more for his assistance against Belladonna, which he accepted. He told the adventurers that Belladonna rested in the catacombs past a triple-locked door. The gems they found with the twins were two of the three needed locks, the third resting with Seronel. He didn’t have any gadgets to offer this time, like against Nylla and Itrea, and soon mysteriously disappeared again, leaving the party to ponder whether to rest their rather weary bodies or march on to fight Belladonna on the same day as well.

Scouting the Vampire Castle

The adventurers, particularly Kathryn Dùmas had a brush with death as they fought a particularly powerful member of the Black Guard and some of his lackies, but eventually triumphed over them, acquiring a keyring and a magical bracer with the symbol of a nightshade on it in the process.

As they continued exploring the first floor of the castle, they came across a mysterious figure who agreed to help them in their quest by using his powers to remove some of the Black Guard in return for information on Ankshi. He also provided the party with some information on the twins and Seronel, in particular their location and their weaknesses, and gave them four magical gems, two red, two blue, which are meant to overcome one of the twins’ defenses each. Then he disappeared.

The adventurers found some ledgers that might be of interest as well, but other than that, the search of the first floor proved fairly fruitless, and no stairs up were to be found at first glance. However, three statues turned out to have levers for arms, and after some trial and error and some more thinking, the adventurers found the right combination, which opened a secret door leading to the stairs up.

On the top floor, a corridor led to a single room with a small garden in it, an altar at the center, with a book and a golden bowl, as well as a locked door. The adventurers noticed signs of a trap and were careful, but eventually decided to open the book, which read “Place within the only thing that truly matters.” After some discussion, the Cyl Morrow decided to let a drop of blood fall into the bowl, which unfortunately triggered the trap, but after some frantic scrambling at the door and wracking their brains for a solution Namyra dropped the magical nightshade bracer in the bowl, and the doors opened.

Beyond was the twins’ sanctum, a room with two coffins, one surrounded by pillows, the other by burning candles, with a magic circle in between. Cyl carefully made her way inside, stealing a few items to use for a possible future confrontation with the vampire twins, but something woke one of them, and the party only just managed to flee the scene. Curiously, the vampire seemed to be unharmed by sunlight as it chased them out of the castle.

Returning to Earthsgate just in time for dusk, the party sook shelter at the church of Pelor again, and reported the new developments to Ankshi, including their deal with the mysterious figure.

The Story So Far

The four adventurers first met, most of them having recently arrived in Tyr, when they were hired by Lord Carvel Drannath, the founder of the Seekers’ Guild, to investigate the disappearance of another group of adventurers employed by the guild, the Platinum Shield. The Shield had been sent to the nearby dwarven mine of Dekzhurad, and sent a magical distress call from there. The mine had been long abandoned, but was recently reopened, and as the adventurers arrived there, they found it overrun by spiders, the dwarven miners driven out once more. On the way, they also witnessed a strange meteor falling onto the mine.

Investigating the mine, the adventurers eventually found the Platinum Shield, three of them still alive, though their leader had turned traitor and called up the spiders from a deep hole in the ground. He had been converted by Lolth, who seemingly had physically fallen to the world, creating the hole with her impact. Defeating the fallen paladin, the adventurers returned only to witness the public execution of four of the twelve merchant lords of the ruling council of Tyr by priests of Avandra. They were rewarded for their services, though troubling questions remained.

Nevertheless they were soon sent on another task to the mining town of Earthsgate, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of slave shipments over the recent years. Stopping a group of kobolds led by a dragonborn from attacking a coach led by a dwarf, the adventurers arrived otherwise unhindered only to discover there were more things amiss in Earthsgate than first believed.

The town turned out to be under the control of Lady Belladonna Atroya, a powerful vampire living in a nearby castle, and her twin daughters. Most of the townspeople appeared to be mindless slaves, only a few finding safe haven in the church of Pelor in town, where a strange eladrin woman named Ankshi, who seemed to have a strong divine aura, protected people from the vampires and the lethargy otherwise resting over the town.

After a brief encounter with Seronel, the newest member of the Atroya family, that ended in his handy defeat, the adventurers returned to the church to make plans. On the next day, they headed out to Earthsgate Castle to gather more information on the vampires during daylight, but were stopped by the strange Black Guard employed by the vampires, who seemed to be magically controlled puppets of some sort. They fought, and made their way into the castle, hoping to find more clues about what’s going on there, particularly since there seemed to be more to it all than just the vampires… the shadow lying over Earthsgate might have something to do with another fallen god.

Welcome to your Adventure Log!
A blog for your campaign

Every campaign gets an Adventure Log, a blog for your adventures!

While the wiki is great for organizing your campaign world, it’s not the best way to chronicle your adventures. For that purpose, you need a blog!

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.
